Diagetic/Non-Diagetic Sound and Foley Project

DIAGETIC + NON-DIAGETIC SOUND

Diagetic sound is sound that is made within the scene within the diegesis. This can be anything from a song playing through the radio to the character speaking or any sound that is in the environment in the movie.

Non-diagetic sound is sound that isn't in the world of were the movie is set. This can be anything from music that is playing over the top of the movie or a narrator that is explaining what is going on over the top of the scene but isn't actually in the diegesis.

Sometimes sounds can start of Non-Diagetic and then turn into a diagetic sound. For example if someone is narrating off screen but then they are on screen and continuing saying what they were saying it has turned from a non-diagetic sound to a diagetic sound. Non-diagetic sound is things like a narrators commentary, the score etc.

Non-Diagetic EG. Narration over the scene, Gunshots etc

Foley

Foley is the process of recording (typically in post production)sound effects. For example someone typing on a keyboard on screen would make a noise but sometimes people will record someone just typing on a keyboard and put it over the top of  the the scene to emphasise that he is typing.

EG. Making a noise of horse walking with something like coconuts, swinging a sword and hitting something etc

Jack Foley - Jack Foley was born on the 12 of April 1891 and he invented the art of foley hence the name of it. He worked in a hardware store and then when the farmers sold the land to the city of L.A for water rights he figured that the town needed a source of income and decided to start up a  movie business as it had picked up recently in L.A. He then went to work on pictures such as Melody of LoveShow Boat (1929), Dat Ol' Ribber, Spartacus, and Operation Petticoat. He even got the award the golden reel. Instead of using pre-recorded sounds that were used generically, Foley's process involved synchronising sounds to individual productions to give them a more realistic feel.

JuxtaPosition

A juxtaposition is the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. Movies use juxtaposition of images frequently to evoke a given response. For example, in "The Godfather," in 1972, a baby is baptized while violent scenes are being shown at the same time. This creates a range of emotion and reaction, sadness not the least of them. Another example is filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" where scenes of violence and war were shown while "What a Wonderful World" played in the background. Michael Moore may have been attempting to evoke emotions of anger or frustration within the viewer.

Evaluation:

We were given the task of making the sounds for an animation using the art of foley. We recorded an array of sounds but for the sounds that we couldn't get to sound good we used some royalty free sounds, Splat and horse walking sound, from the internet. We also used Prelude and Action, made by Kevin Macleod, as a backing track to the clip.

What I Thought Worked Well:

I think the first horse noise worked well through the entire piece. I think that we synched it up pretty well to the movement of the horse. I think the arrow flying through the air worked well with the arrows. Considering it was a easy noise to make it worked better than we thought it would. I also think we synched that well with piece.I thought the head splatting noise worked extremely well. As soon as his head exploded the noise played.

What I Thought Didn't Work Well:

The second horse noise was not the best admittedly but we needed a sound effect for it and we didn't have the time to record another. The hitting of the woman sound was not the best for a flesh ripping noise as in the clip when the man hits the woman her back rips open. It made a click noise instead of that noise. However we didn't know how to make this noise.

What I Would Do Differently In The Future:

I would manage my time better so I could record all my sounds or choose a better sound effect if I didn't know how to make the sound.I also would make sure to upload it to drop box or email it to each other so if one of us is ill or haven't turned up then we an access it easily.

Overall:

Overall I think it went well. For our first project I think we worked well together and also we made a few mistakes but we can learn from these mistakes and improve on the next one.
